Barcelona has confirmed the acquisition of forward Vitor Roque from Athletico-PR for approximately €40 million ($44 million).
ESPN reported last week that Barça had reached an agreement with the Brazilian club, and 18-year-old Roque has signed a contract with the Catalan club through the end of the 2030-31 season. He is set to link up with his new teammates next summer.
€500 million has been specified as Roque’s release clause.
Roque is Barca’s third summer acquisition, following the entrance of Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez as free agents after their contracts with Manchester City and Athletic Club expired.
Due to Robert Lewandowski’s impending 35th birthday in August, identifying a potential successor and reserve for the Poland striker was a top priority for Barcelona this summer.
ESPN reported in June that Roque had become their most coveted player. Soon after, under the direction of sporting director Deco, negotiations accelerated.
Roque attracted the attention of Barcelona after starring for Athletico and Brazil’s junior teams. Last season, he assisted his club in reaching the final of the Copa Libertadores and recently earned his first senior debut for his nation.
In 65 appearances for Athletico, the teenager has tallied 22 goals, including six in his last six outings.
When asked what Barca can anticipate from Roque, Laporta told Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday, “goals,”
“He has his own distinct approach. He cannot be compared to former Brazil strikers Ronaldo and Romario. He is someone who is lethal within the confines of the cage.
“He is unlike anyone we’ve had here before. If you had to compare him to anyone, it would be Ronaldo, who was an unstoppable force for us. “[Roque] possesses an abundance of potential, is young, strong, and Brazilian.”
