Flight 5Y095 departed at 10:11 p.m. and was in the air for less than an hour, landing shortly after 11 p.m.
A huge cargo plane was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off from a Miami airport due to a “engine malfunction,” according to an airline spokesman.
On Thursday at 10:11 p.m. ET, Flight 5Y095, an Atlas Air Boeing 747-8 cargo airliner, departed Miami International Airport (MIA) for Puerto Rico. An Atlas Air spokeswoman informed Fox News that the plane quickly experienced an engine issue, returned to MIA, and landed safely within an hour.
“The crew followed all standard procedures and safely returned to MIA,” the statement stated, emphasizing that safety is the company’s main priority. Atlas Air also stated that it will perform a comprehensive inspection to determine what caused the malfunction.
The plane remained in the air for less than an hour. It is unclear how many crew members were on board at the time.
According to Reuters, multiple witnesses saw flames shooting from the plane’s left wing.
There were no injuries recorded. Fox News Digital contacted Miami-Dade Fire Rescue but did not receive an immediate answer.
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 747-8, according to FlightAware data. Throughout the abruptly interrupted flight, it never ascended above 3,800 feet.
Earlier in the month, an Alaska Airlines MAX 9 airplane made an emergency landing after it took off from Portland, Oregon, as part of its fuselage fell off.
The event prompted the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ground certain aircraft for safety inspections temporarily.
