Arsenal looked a different team this season after the addition of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to their young squad.
The Gunners are currently top of the Premier League with 21 points winning seven games out of eight matches. Mikel Arteta’s side made a statement of intent this weekend after a 3-1 win over arch-rivals Tottenham in North London.
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal are the second-best team in the Premier League behind Manchester City and admitted that his former side has a good chance of competing with Manchester City for the Premier League.
What did Arsene Wenger say?
Asked if he considers Arsenal as Premier League Title challenger this season, Arsene Wenger said via beIN Sports: “Yeah, personally I would put them just behind City.
“[Arsenal are] the second-best team to have a good chance to win the Premier League because Man City at some stage will focus highly on the Champions League.”
Quizzed if he feels it’s Arsenal’s best chance of challenging for the Premier League, The Frenchmen added: “I think so.
“And after we don’t know about Liverpool but they are already 11 points behind and 10 points behind Man City is a mountain to climb.
“And Chelsea as well do not look consistent at the moment. They have not found the confidence to contend to win the league.
“Tottenham, anyway, by my DNA I cannot give you [a prediction].”
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has slammed three Manchester United for their first half showing against Manchester City.
Manchester City defeated Manchester United 6-3 in the Manchester derby. The Citizens were 4 goals up in the first half thanks to goals from Erling Haaland (2) and Phil Foden (2).
Arsene Wenger said: “What is for me unbelievable in the first half is that Man United has defended so badly on the flanks.
“From the first minute on Diogo Dalot got a yellow card and Sancho and Antony did not contribute defensively.
“They were, in the whole half, flooded on the flanks and they were always in trouble.
“After that, when they had the ball, I felt they were obsessed by respecting too much the game plan.
“They wanted always to go too quickly forward and lost so many balls and didn’t have enough possession.
“They didn’t play for possession, they wanted just to get on the counter-attack.
“The only positive circumstances I must give them is that they conceded the second goal when Varane was [off the pitch]. And when I saw that Eriksen was marking Haaland you worried for Man United.”
Arsenal faces another big challenge in their quest to fight for the Premier League when they face Liverpool on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium. Manchester United will travel to Goodison Park to face Everton.
