The star said of AI, “Today, everyone is afraid of it and where it will go.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger, a famous actor from Hollywood, said that the artificial intelligence technology shown in the “Terminator” movies has “become a reality.”
During an event in Los Angeles for the 75-year-old Austrian-born actor and his limited edition picture book, Schwarzenegger talked about how today’s AI technology is similar to the AI he played in an action movie from the 1980s.
“Now, over the course of decades, it has become a reality,” Schwarzenegger said. He also said that “Terminator” director James Cameron should be praised for being able to see the future.
Since the first movie came out in 1984, big-budget sequels have been made in the series, which is about a war between humans and self-aware robots that want to kill all humans.
Even though that future hasn’t come yet, Schwarzenegger said at the event that AI seems to have gotten close to where Cameron pictured it in the movie.
He talked about the movie and AI and said, “Today, everyone is afraid of it and where it’s going to go. And in this movie, “Terminator,” we talk about robots becoming self-aware and taking over.”
Some have made concerns about AI of the world’s top tech and science experts, as Schwarzenegger noted. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Twitter’s owner, said recently, “Arguably, we are on the event horizon of the black hole that is artificial superintelligence.”
Musk said he doesn’t think “AI is going to try to kill everyone,” but he also said it could “put us under strict control.” Using Schwarzenegger and Cameron’s movie as an example, he said there is “not a zero chance” that AI will go “full Terminator” in the future.
During his speech, Schwarzenegger talked about how far technology has come since 1984. He said, “We had just scratched the top of AI (artificial intelligence) back then. “Give it some thought.”
“Now, after a number of years, it has become true. So it’s no longer science fiction or fantasy. It’s here right now. So, this is Jim Cameron’s amazing writing,” he said, praising the director.
The star kept praising Cameron, whose movies like “Terminator,” “Aliens,” “Titanic,” and the “Avatar” series have done well at the box office.
He said, “He’s such a great writer and such an amazing director. Again, this is one of those things where I wish I could take credit for the movie.”
Cameron is known for making great movies and pushing the limits of film technology. He is also a passionate deep-sea researcher. The news media recently asked Cameron for his opinion on the OceanGate Titan submarine collapse, which was a terrible accident.
Schwarzenegger went on to say that his role as the main character in the movie was only a small part of Cameron’s genius. He said, “All I can take credit for is the role I played and how I played it. But I mean that he made this person. He wrote it and the movie so well that he is, you know, the best director in the world.
