The 17-year-old Marvin Aneer Jalo was detained on terrorism-related accusations and will face adult prosecution.
A juvenile who allegedly plotted a terror attack during the Phoenix Pride parade earlier this month has been indicted by an Arizona grand jury.
Marvin Aneer Jalo, 17, has been detained on terrorism-related accusations and will face adult charges, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
According to the indictment, Jalo “knowingly or intentionally provided advice, assistance, direction, or management of an act of terrorism to further the political objective, public declarations, manifestos, or goals of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), or the Islamic State.”
According to a section of the lawyer’s office statement, “The defendant is currently being held on a $1 million cash-only bond,”
According to authorities, Jalo intended to assault the Phoenix Pride Festival.
According to the investigation, Marvin Jalo engaged in online chat rooms between November 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024, when he discussed and ordered the materials needed to create an improvised explosive device. He talked about his intention to produce TATP (triacetone triperoxide), an unstable bomb that may shoot shrapnel and other hazardous materials into the air, killing or seriously injuring nearby residents, according to a portion of the MCAO’s statement.
In addition, prosecutors said that after receiving the explosives’ materials in late November 2023, Jalo “posted various videos of himself making the TATP” while “continuing to reference a desire to use those explosives.”
Jalo had “conversations about making an RC-controlled bomb and attacking various targets, including in New York City,” they added, via Telegram.
For a “unrelated incident involving criminal damage and disorderly conduct-[domestic violence],” Jalo was detained at his Buckeye residence, according to court paperwork, Fox 10 Phoenix reported.
According to documents, Jalo’s mother also informed police that she had reason to believe her son was confirming information “in chat rooms, with the use of his cell phone, speaking with other subjects whom she described as terrorists, who had been conspiring to conduct a possible attack.”
“Jalo admitted to talking to radicals who were actively recruiting him in an interview with the police. Before participating in a terrorist incident, [Jalo] informed authorities that he wanted to learn more and better prepare himself, according to the records.
According to the prosecutors, Jalo planned to transfer his explosives via a “bomb drone”
The Phoenix Pride Festival, according to its organizers, is “an annual celebratory and educational event commemorating the ‘Stonewall Riots,’ acknowledged as the beginning of the modern gay rights movement.”
