Smith’s bodyguard called 911, and hotel workers performed CPR as he waited for emergency medical services. Smith’s corpse was confirmed dead at Memorial Regional Hospital at 2:49 p.m. Broward County Medical Examiner and forensic pathologist Joshua Perper led the investigation with Seminole police and other forensic pathologists and toxicologists.
Perper ascribed Smith’s death to “combined drug intoxication” and identified sleep aid chloral hydrate as a contributing cause.
