An American Airlines flight from New York to Delhi was diverted to Rome on Sunday, February 23, 2025, after a bomb threat was reported.
The flight, which departed from the John F. Kennedy International Airport, was heading to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
The flight, AA292, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, was carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members when the threat was reported while the plane was flying over the Caspian Sea. In response, the captain decided to divert the flight to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport for safety.
American Airlines in a statement said: “American Airlines flight 292, with service from New York to Delhi, diverted to Rome due to a possible security concern.”

Upon receiving the threat, the crew reported the security issue to The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the flight was escorted by two Italian Air Force fighter jets to ensure a secure landing. The plane touched down safely at the airport, and all passengers and crew were quickly disembarked.
Once the plane landed, it was inspected by Italian law enforcement, and the bomb threat was determined to be non-credible. The passengers and crew were then taken to a secure area at the airport.
American Airlines has arranged for the passengers to stay overnight in Rome to allow the crew to rest. The airline is working to ensure that the passengers can continue their journey to New Delhi as soon as possible.
