Despite his decades-long assertions of innocence, Adnan Syed was found guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee and sentenced to life in prison in the year 2000.
At the request of State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, a court in Baltimore shortened his life sentence to the amount of time he had already spent in prison on Monday.
Syed, who is now 41 years old and was incarcerated for a crime he claimed he was innocent of, was freed from prison after spending 22 years there for a crime for which prosecutors notified the court that “The state no longer has trust in the integrity of the conviction.”
It is too soon to tell whether he will be safe or not at this point. For the next thirty days, he will be required to stay under house arrest while the prosecution deliberates on whether or not to seek a new trial.
