Career
Weitsman left his job in New York City to take over the family’s scrap metal business in his hometown after his sister passed away from cancer in the early 1990s. Here, he developed a passion for the processing aspect of recycling scrap metal, which eventually led to the establishment of Upstate Shredding. Weitsman established Upstate Shredding at the Tioga County Industrial Park in Owego in 1997.
After his father retired, Weitsman bought Ben Weitsman & Son, Inc., Upstate Shredding’s sibling firm, in 2005. In December 2009, Weitsman bought an 11-acre scrapyard in Solvay, New York, from Peter Matlow. Weitsman purchased Empire Recycling in Watertown, New York, a port facility in Albany, and a scrap yard in New Castle, Pennsylvania, between 2012 and 2016. Together, they were known as Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling by the end of 2016.
Weitsman was the recipient of the AMM Scrap Company of the Year award for the second consecutive year and the Platts Industry Leadership Award that year.
