Sen. Graham seemed to be making fun of ‘The Squad’, a group of progressive members of Congress.
Turkey is turning into “The Squad” of NATO, according to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan labeled Israel a war criminal for its efforts to combat Hamas terrorists.
In a message on X, the website that was formerly known as Twitter, the Republican senator stated as much on Saturday.
“Seems that Turkey, particularly senior leadership, is setting itself up to be ‘The Squad’ of NATO,” stated Graham. “Very disappointing and destabilizing.”
The term “The Squad” describes an unofficial group of Democratic progressives in the U.S. House of Representatives that includes Reps. Cori Bush of Missouri, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamal Bowman of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.
Since Hamas shocked the Jewish State on October 7, some of these “Squad” members have publicly criticized the Israeli government.
Tlaib, who has a well-documented history of criticizing Israel, stated in a statement the day after Hamas’ offensive started, “This heartbreaking cycle of violence will continue as long as our country provides billions in unconditional funding to support the apartheid government.”
Tlaib also maintains his skepticism over the conclusions reached by the Israeli and American governments that an attack at a Gaza hospital was caused by an erroneous rocket fired from Gaza by Islamic Jihad, an ally of Hamas that was aiming for Israel.
The congresswoman made an additional attempt to cast doubt on the findings by pointing out that the U.S. and Israeli governments have a well-established history of deceiving the public about war crimes. The findings also revealed that the explosion occurred primarily in the hospital parking lot and that the number of casualties is estimated to be much lower than the several hundred that Hamas initially claimed.
Graham’s statement included a link to a Fox News Digital article concerning Erdogan’s recent remarks denouncing Israel as a war criminal for taking revenge on Hamas.
“Israel has been openly committing war crimes for 22 days, but the Western leaders cannot even call on Israel for a ceasefire, let alone react to it,” Erdogan addressed the gathering in Istanbul.
“We are going to expose Israel as a war criminal to the entire world.” We’re getting ready for this. “We intend to designate Israel as a war criminal,” the president of Turkey stated.
Israel is pulling its ambassadors from Turkey, according to Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Eli Cohen, in response to Erdogan’s remarks, in order to reevaluate Israel’s relations with Turkey.
Shortly after Hamas launched its offensive earlier this month, Turkey criticized the bloodshed in Israel and lamented the casualties inflicted by the terrorist organization. However, Erdogan changed his stance in response to Israel’s response and began calling Hamas militants “freedom fighters.”
Since Hamas launched its biggest onslaught against Israel in decades on October 7, which prompted Israeli forces to retaliate, more than 8,700 people have died in Gaza and Israel. Many others have been taken hostage by Hamas and have been raped, tortured, and killed. Thousands more have been injured.
