The landing ship, named Novocherkassk, was targeted by plane-launched guided missiles at a base in the city of Feodosia, according to the Russian government.
According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, a major Russian landing vessel in Crimea was hit by cruise missiles launched by Ukraine overnight, killing at least one person.
The Novocherkassk landing ship was targeted by plane-launched guided missiles at a base in the city of Feodosia, according to the ministry, and footage shared online shows a massive flame rising into the night sky as a result of the strike. There were more explosions and fires that could be seen.
According to the RIA news agency, four people were killed and four more were injured.
According to the ministry, two Ukrainian fighter jets were destroyed by anti-aircraft fire during the attack, which occurred about 2:50 a.m. local time. It is unknown whether the anti-aircraft fire resulted in any injuries.
Exact details concerning the degree of the ship’s damage were not immediately available. However, Ukrainian Air Force Spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat believes the Novocherkassk will struggle to restart normal operations.
“We can see how massive the explosion was and how it detonated. “After that, it’s very difficult for a ship to survive because this was not a rocket, but a munitions detonation,” he told Radio Free Europe.
According to Reuters, Ukraine employed cruise missiles in the operation. Both the United Kingdom and France have provided cruise missiles to Kiev.
On Tuesday morning, Ukraine’s defense ministry said the vessel had sunk in a post and accompanying images.
On Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that his country assisted Russia’s submarine navy in wrecking the ship.
“The occupiers will not have a single peaceful place in Ukraine,” he told reporters.
