Local sources say that on Monday night in Washington, US politician Henry Cuellar was held up at gunpoint while his car was taken.
The Democrat from Texas, Mr. Cuellar, was parked about a mile (1.6 km) from the US Capitol when three armed people approached him.
He was not hurt, and his car was later found.
In a statement, the US Capitol Police said that officers were trying to find the people who did this.
The event took place around 21:30 local time (1:30 GMT) in the Navy Yard neighborhood in the city’s southeast.
Jacob Hochberg, Mr. Cuellar’s chief of staff, said that the 68-year-old’s phone and iPad were also taken along with his car. It’s not clear if these were given back.
In the past few years, there have been more car thefts in Washington. The local police department started a squad in 2021 to deal with the problem.
According to the most recent numbers from the police, there have been 750 carjackings in the city so far this year. Seventy-five percent of these crimes involved guns.
Mr. Cuellar is currently in his 10th term, representing Texas’s 28th congressional district in the US House of Representatives.
