The lawsuit stated that the 10-year-old pupil’s dismissal was ‘arbitrary and capricious.’
A fifth grader was dismissed from one of the top private schools in California for sharing a squirt gun and rap lyrics with a friend, warranting an immediate lawsuit from the boy’s parents.
The lawsuit filed on Thursday in LA Superior Court followed the dismissal of a 10-year-old boy from Curtis School. You might be wondering what kind of rap lyrics will lead to the dismissal of a student. The 10-year-old was expelled for sending squirt emojis and YNW Melly rap song “Murder on My Mind” lyrics to a friend via email.
The lawsuit claimed that the Head of the School, Meera Ratnesr, unfairly disciplined the boy without “evidence that his email exchange broke a school policy.”
The parents of the boy in question seek to reverse the boy’s dismissal from the Curtis School and settle the family’s attorney’s fees.
The lawsuit states: “[The] decision to expel [the student] and bar him from campus is arbitrary and capricious.” The reports indicated that the boy sent the lyrics of the 2018 rap song “Murder on My Mind” on September 8.
His friend, also a fifth grader, confirmed that he woke up in the morning and got “Murder on my mind.”
Over a fortnight, September, the pupils continued emailing each other during their shared first-period math class and sent several squirt gun emojis.
The boy was summoned by his director and his homeroom teacher to discuss the emails. However, the court reports stated that the boy was shown the special emails.
Ratnesar met with the boy’s parents and immediately informed them that their son was expelled and banned from the campus.
The school also issued the following to the local media outlets:
“While we were disappointed to learn about the litigation, our priority is to ensure a safe and secure campus for all of our students,” the statement said. “We are unable to comment on individual students.”
However, the parents of the boy will not rest until they get justice for their son. This story is still developing; we will come your way with more details and matters arising.
