Rebecca Joynes, a 30-year-old teacher, trained two students from the age of 15, with one student who described the aftermath as “a very dark time.”
A teenage boy who was victimized by a Manchester teacher who was sentenced to six and half years in prison has revealed how coerced, controlled, manipulated, and sexually and mentally abused.
Following a trial in May, Rebecca Joynes, a 30-year-old teacher, was found guilty on six counts of having sex with a child, two of which she continued as in a position of trust.
The secondary school teacher started grooming two students when she was fifteen. Rebecca was on for having sex with a boy whose name was not disclosed, and she later began having sex with a boy, whose child she eventually gave birth to.
Judge Cornell told Joynes, who was being sentenced at Manchester Crown Court, “There is a breathtaking arrogance in your conduct.” You are the adult. As the person in charge, you had the responsibility and the authority to take care of the boys and the trust placed on by the school, the boys’ parents, and the boys themselves.
“Instead, you abused the position of trust and took advantage of the privileged role for your own sexual gratification.”
The second victim claimed that because of his training, he would “argue until I was blue in the face protecting Joynes and would not hear a bad word against her” in a victim impact statement that the prosecutor presented aloud in the court.
He added, “I was coerced, controlled, manipulated, sexually abused, and mentally abused.” It is really upsetting. I went through a challenging period in the months following the abuse. I felt trapped and helpless. I had just spent the last eighteen months living two lives behind my family’s back.
“My family and I suffered as a result of this. My family felt hopeless because they couldn’t accept that I was in school where they thought I was safe but that is what happened as a result.”
As Joynes was given her punishment, Cornell comforted the sobbing girl, saying, “It may be asked what the 15-year-old boy would not want to have sex with an older, active teacher? They would undoubtedly accept it. How can this be a crime?
“Well, Miss Joyness, this is definitely criminal activity. Both guys were clearly innocent, easily tricked and seduced by an older, attractive woman, and very much victims.”
In addition, Joynes received a restraining order pertaining to the boys and a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order in addition to being regarded as a sex offender.
