A gunshot during a motorcycle event in Galveston, Texas, on Saturday night left five people hurt, according to authorities.
Around 11 p.m. local time, shots were fired as people gathered for the Lone Star Rally in The Strand, a historic neighborhood, according to CNN, a spokesman for the Galveston Police Department Kurt Koopmann.
According to Koopmann, all five of the victims of the shooting were sent to a nearby trauma facility for treatment.
Koopmann stated, “One person of interest has been detained, but at this time, no charges have been brought against them.” The event is still being looked into.
It is unknown how many persons opened fire during the shooting or what preceded it.
The event had already brought a large law enforcement presence to the area, allowing first responders to react swiftly, according to Koopmann.
According to its Facebook page, the Lone Star event is the largest four-day motorcycle event in North America. Hundreds of thousands of people were expected to visit the island this weekend, according to organizers.
“There remains a very active police investigation in the area, with the street closed between 21st and 23rd Streets,” Galveston Police stated in a Facebook message. “There are motorcycles and other property in that area that must remain in place until the investigation is complete.”
Galveston is a city on the Texas Gulf Coast about 50 miles from Houston.
