One Chicago restaurant owner stated that this was his second robbery in four months.
At least a dozen Chicago companies were forced to pick up the pieces after vandals broke into and burglarized them overnight.
The break-ins occurred over a three-hour span late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
At 11:40 p.m. on Monday, the Daily Grill was the site of Chicago’s first attempted burglary. According to the Chicago Police Department, no one entered the eatery.
The robbers fled and continued to break into and steal from at least a dozen nearby coffee shops, businesses, and restaurants until 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
In one case, vandals were seen taking up cinder blocks and smashing a glass pane.
According to police, the burglars seized the restaurant’s cash register.
Cenk Duman, a co-owner of a burglarized restaurant, claims that employing security is “pointless” because the robbers only stole $200 from the cash register.
“There’s no point in hiring security, I mean there’s only $200 in the cash register,” Duman told FOX 32. “What we’re thinking, and what other stores are thinking, is just leaving the cash drawers open, empty, at night, so they know there’s nothing there.”
“Just to avoid breaking the glass–that’s the most frustrating part.” We’re losing sales, we have to close, we have to file insurance claims, it’s simply a nightmare,” Duman remarked. “We’re just trying to run an honest business.”
Surveillance video from an Italian restaurant, Francos Italian Cuisine, showed robbers shattering the glass entrance to gain entry.
The owner stated that they have been open for 34 years and that this is the second robbery in four months.
As of Tuesday night, no arrests had been made.
Police have not stated if they believe the burglaries are linked.
