Recent research found there are more than 289 million cars in the US, so it might not be surprising that there are quite a few road accidents. Unfortunately, often these are avoidable, and poor driving practices have led to a collision.

But what are negligence examples of car accidents where a third party was at fault? If you don’t know which driving behaviors are considered to be negligent when driving, you might not realize your accident was caused by someone else.

While there are many ways a driver can be at fault when they are involved in a collision, we’re going to take a look at 4 common examples of unsafe driving.

1. Driving Too Closely to the Car in Front

If someone is following too closely, they may not have enough time to stop if the car ahead begins to slow down. For example, if a driver has to brake sharply to avoid something that has gone into their path, the driver behind them might not be able to react quickly enough. In this scenario, the collision could be the following driver’s fault because they did not keep a safe distance from another vehicle.

2. Driving Under the Influence

Should a driver have too much alcohol in their system, or drive while under the influence of drugs, they are more likely to cause an accident. This could be for several reasons such as not being able to control their vehicle, or even falling asleep at the wheel. If you’ve been in a collision with a driver who has consumed alcohol or taken drugs, the accident might be their fault. 

3. Inattentive Driving 

Not paying attention while driving can lead to accidents. For example, if someone is texting while driving, they may not notice a car in front of them has come to a stop. They may then drive into the other car before they realize it’s in their way. Staying alert is essential when you are on the road. 

4. Driving Too Fast

A driver that is going too fast may not give themselves enough time to slow down when they need to. This could result in them running a red light and being in a collision, or hitting a slower-moving vehicle that is ahead of them.

These negligence examples could help you determine who is at fault if you are in a road traffic collision. If someone is driving too closely to your vehicle, or not paying enough attention to the road, this could suggest they are to blame for the accident. In addition, if a driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or they are driving at excessive speed, they could be at fault in a collision. 

Making sure you don’t use these driving behaviors may also help reduce your chances of causing an accident while you’re on the road.
