A community leader reported Saturday that at least 15 people were killed in eastern Congo after a group of children carried home an explosive device they discovered while playing.
The catastrophe occurred on Friday evening in the village of Kyangitsi, located on the territory of Masisi in the province of North Kivu.
Telesphore Mitondeke, a Masisi civil society organization member, stated that the device detonated at approximately 8:00 p.m. local time while some residents were attempting to determine what it was.
The region has been the site of battles between local armed groups contending to control villages for the past two weeks.
Numerous municipalities are already controlled by the “Wazalendo” patriot self-defense forces. According to local community leaders, the M23 rebels have been displaced from a portion of the strategic town of Kitshanga, which is now under the control of the young patriots.
Many civilians have fled the area due to the ongoing fighting, which has caused widespread dread among the populace. Mitondeke stated that the region “is littered with numerous abandoned and booby-trapped explosive devices left by fighters.”
